Kohler's New Engines
Kohler Engines get ready to offer a complete range of engines with up to one tonne payload for the Indian automotive market.

Kohler Engines, part of the Kohler Co, a $5-billion company head?quartered at Wisconsin, US, unveiled the new 2012 version of KD441 engine with improved power, torque and fuel efficiency and also showcased a range of engines for ?last mile connectivity? vehicles at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi. Kohler Engines has long been developing technology with special focus on superior combustion, resulting in higher fuel effi?ciency and lower emission.

Sudipto Mukherjee, GM - Marketing, Kohler Engines Division of India said, ?I take immense pride in announcing that Kohler Engines Division in India has successful achieved BS-IV emission norms with the single-cylinder, air-cooled mecha?nical engine ? KD441 in the Indian auto?motive market, the first of its kind in the world to fulfill Stage-IV norms. The trials for the same are going on vehicles of few leading Indian automakers and the certi?fication formalities will be completed in due course. Kohler Engines is now ready to offer engines for 700-800 kg and 900-1,000 kg payload four-wheel commercial diesel vehicles ? mechanical engines for BS-III and common rail versions of same engines for BS-IV.?

The company offers a complete range of engines up to one tonne payload. It is now the leader in India for engines for 500 kg payload four-wheel commercial diesel vehicles plying on Indian roads. The vehicles powered by Kohler?s KD441 engine in this category are Mahindra & Mahindra?s GiO, which comes in both goods and passenger carrier variants; and Piaggio?s Ape Mini (Goods). Kohler?s KD441 is a single-cylinder, 441cc, air cooled, direct injection, 9.2 hp/6.8 kW engine, with robust performance and a fuel efficiency of 27+ kmpl.

Kohler also exhibited a range of engines for ?last mile connectivity? vehicles. The engines are available in diesel, petrol and CNG variants for both three and four-wheelers. The engines are manufactured at the world-class manufacturing facility at Aura?ngabad (Maharashtra), to support the auto?motive OEMs for all new vehicle projects.

KDW 702 (2-cyl, 686 cc, water-cooled) 12.5 kW engine from the Kohler engine range has been selected as the optimum solution for BS-III emission compliance providing the right balance between power and fuel efficiency for 700-800 kg payload vehicle category. The common rail version of the same engine will provide 15 kW power and meet BS-IV emission com?pliance. KDW 1003 (3-cyl, 1028 cc, water- cooled) 20 kW engine from the Kohler engine range has been selected as the optimum solution for BS-III emission com?pliance providing the right balance bet?ween power and fuel efficiency for 900-1,000 kg payload vehicle category. The common rail version of the same engine will provide 22 kW power and meet BS-IV emission compliance. Also, the same en?gine can be manufactured with vertical or tilted options, as desired by OEMs for appropriate packaging in their vehicles. Kohler is also adding a turbocharger to these engines to increase power and tor?que, if required for any vehicle project.

Kohler engine always endeavours to remain at the cutting edge of technology to provide the engines with superior perfor?mance and lower running costs. Kohler is the process of introducing engines beyond 50 kW with emission compliance of BS-IV/V with minimal exhaust gas after-treatment and is evaluating the Indian market for the business potential of these possible new introductions. When the time is right for achieving the economy of scale, these new engines will be made in India to make them more affordable for the domestic market.

Construction Range

The building construction market has become one of the fundamental targets of Kohler Engines? strategy. Taking advantage of its new, complete line of air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines, the company has set a goal of becoming Europe?s leader in five years. Significant results have already been achieved with leading OEMs on their markets, particularly in applications involving road compacting, earthmoving and road maintenance.

Thanks to their advanced technology and reliability, Kohler engines offer performance that is perfectly suited to a market that requires quiet, vibration-free products that improve the comfort of the ultimate user.

The increasingly greater attention paid to these areas is evident in the concept of the Sileo engine: a soundproofed unit that drastically reduces noise.
