Our wide range of super long reach excavators, of which there are no equal in terms of reach and digging depth, are highly valued and in great demand, says Murad Jetha, Director, Bardai Group. In an exclusive chat with EQUIPMENT INDIA, Jetha speaks about the rental industry. Excerpts from the interview.  


What is the present status of the equipment rental industry its size and value, its potential, and percentage of growth?  
The rental industry is set for a long-term steady growth pattern, mainly because it represents a quick turn around and relatively low capital investment for clients in the construction and infrastructure industry. Rental equipment usually means no need for storage and maintenance facilities, which in itself represents a massive cost saving.

What is the total fleet of Bardai and what are its strengths and core competencies?
We operate and run over 200 various types of earth moving, dredging and construction machinery, ranging from excavators, dozers, graders, generators, compressors and various, very unique and mission specific equipment, not found in India.

Bardai?s strength and core competencies lie in the fact that there is very little that we cannot achieve. Onshore or offshore, we cover almost every aspect of the infrastructure industry. We are ready to mobilise within very short notice and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our team of highly skilled and hands on technicians is available anywhere in India and if necessary worldwide, to evaluate and guide our client?s exacting requirements.

Which are the industries serviced by Bardai and also tell us the range of equipment on offer.
We have executed jobs in a wide infrastructural gamut, to name a few dredging, residential/industrial construction, basement and foundation, roads and infrastructure, power generation, on and off- shore pipelines, oil and gas, demolition, and coal handling for power plants.

We provide a turnkey rental package for our esteemed clients. We help develop, engineer, provide solutions and execute their requirements in a cost and time effective manner.We provide our clients with 24 hour on site support and almost immediate parts availability to minimise downtime and maintain maximum productivity.

Tell us about the rental scenario for specialty services, and range of products offered.
The specialty services rental market is still in its infancy. The main reason behind this is the large cost factor and reliance on old, inefficient technology. Clients may not yet have the concept of these machines being able to complete their job in a very timely and efficient manner, which may have otherwise not proven possible.However, as mentioned, the cost factor is usually a negating point. Once these machines have proved that they have no equal, for the jobs in hand, there will be a greater, universal demand, where hopefully, cost will not be the mitigating factor.Our wide range of super long reach excavators, of which there are no equal, in terms of reach and digging depth are highly valued and in great demand. We are the pioneers in providing shipyards, ports, docks and the offshore industry with 60 hz generator sets in India.

What is the geographical spread?
Our main area of operation is throughout the subcontinent. However, we have successfully operated overseas, and will be planning on spreading our wings globally n the near future.

What is the potential for demolition equipment in rentals?
Again, dredging equipment covers the specialty services segment of the industry. Traditionally dredgers have always been an expensive proposition due to the infrastructure needed to support them. They do have limitations and that?s where we come in. We provide mass, and depending on the situation, capital dredging solutions in a variety of environments from offshore trenching for intake and outflow pipelines for power plant projects, ports, harbours, docks, inland waterways, tidal zones, etc.

Today our fleet is unparalleled in India and we are proud to have the deepest digging backhoe dredger with a depth of 20 m on one of the largest brand new spud barges! Dredging has mainly been a contractual segment of the industry, mainly due to the large numbers involved.

By providing a readily available, easy to mobilise and comparatively much more economic dredging solution, we hope to change the face of the dredging rental market and make it easier and quicker for our clients to execute jobs that would otherwise have taken months of planning and huge expense. Therefore, the rental potential in this avenue is large.

How do you address the issue of lack of trained manpower in this segment?
Manpower is an issue that unfortu?nately has its roots tied to cost effective labour. Many companies do not want to spend the time or money to train their operators, helpers, because more often than not, many of these people soon leave them in the never ending hope of greener pastures elsewhere. Therefore, companies are content hiring as and when de?mand dictates.

How do you find the competition in this area?
There are a lot of very experienced and long standing players in the rental industry.We have gained valuable experience and learned much from many of them and as such, find all competition healthy.
