Sustainable products
SSAB plans to strengthen its position as a leading producer of high-strength steels, while developing the markets in North and Latin America and Asia through advanced offerings based on their cutting-edge expertise.

SSAB's advanced high-strength steels provide stronger, lighter, and more durable solutions. This leads to a better total economy, reduced environmental impact and longer product lifespan. In addition, the by-products from steel production are used in new and innovative solutions which contribute to closing the eco-cycle and create new exciting markets for SSAB.

SSAB's investment in high-strength steels is an investment in a better environment. Compared to standard steel, the high-strength steels provide lower carbon dioxide emissions from a lifecycle perspective. Light and high-strength steel structures save material and energy, both in production and the user stage.

High-strength steels are stronger than standard steels. This means less steel is needed in production which in turn reduces emissions.

Reduced transportation emissions

An advance, high-strength steel makes it possible to produce vehicle structures that weigh much less, which increases the load efficiency and reduces the emissions from transportation. Vehicles, excavation machinery and lifting cranes made of SSAB's steel last longer, which in turn reduce emissions.

SSAB to lead development

Since 2008, SSAB has a Research and Development Council whose goal is to lead the development and realise the potential of high-strength steels. The Council coordinates work within the area and is entrusted with ensuring a continuous transfer of technology between the business areas.

SSAB's Knowledge Service Centre inaugurated a new research and development centre in Montpelier in October 2010. In addition, a new research and development centre was opened in Kunshan, China in early 2012. The aim is to strengthen SSAB's position as a leading producer of high-strength steels, while at the same time developing the markets in North and Latin America and Asia through advanced offerings based on SSAB's cutting-edge expertise.
