Atlas Copco hydraulic breakers rule the world
We have already launched rig- mounted hydraulic bucket crushers recently and expect good results from the quarry and road construction segment, says Vikas Sawhney, Business Line Manager ? Construction Tools, Atlas Copco (India). Excerpts from the interview.

How do you assess the changing trends in the use of a variety of attachments with excavators and loaders such as grabs and buckets and cutters?
As we are progressing with new projects and new avenues are opening up, the demand of different applications required in material handling and demolition is increasing with time- bound jobs being allocated but at a slow pace. Sectors like ports for grabs and buckets, and crushers in demolition are moving at the same pace; a steep rise ( nearly 20 per cent) has been seen only in the case of hydraulic breakers.

In times to come, we will see more use of grabs and crushers as fast as we share the knowledge and applications with prospective buyers.

What is the total market in terms of value and units for rock breakers and what is Atlas Copco?s market share?
The total market of breakers in 2011 was 3, 850 and a 20 per cent rise was expected in 2012 but with the slowdown hitting the market, this did not materialise. We have maintained our market share in the last two years.

Brief us on the range offered in rock breakers and its design features and advantages.
Atlas Copco hydraulic breakers rule the world with a gamut of carriers from the 700 kg class to the 140 tonne class for different applications, produced in state-of-the-art production units in Germany and Sweden, with the most reliable after sales support, directly and through dealers. The hydraulic breakers are used most prominently in applications like foundations in urban areas, secondary breaking in quarries, scaling in tunnel construction, and in primary breaking in mining segments.

We offer our hydraulic breakers with annual maintenance contracts on various parameters as well as full maintenance contracts to ensure the maximum utilisation of the breakers with minimised downtime.

Atlas Copco hydraulic breakers are incorporated with KRUPP percussion technology, and are enriched with patented features, which make the investment most powerful in terms of performance and cost- effectiveness in the long run.

Key features are highest power- to- weight ratio in each category, auto control, start select, vibrosilencer, and HeliCoil insert. Apart from the above features, the reliability of the equipment is well supported by the 1+2 extended warranty programme, which shows the competence of the brand over the complete product line.

Tell us about the range of attachments meant for demolition activities.
Combicutters from 1.5T ? 60 T class carriers, bulk pulverizers from 18T-35T class carriers, demolition pulverisers from 18T?35T class carriers, and multigrapples from 0.70T? 80T class carriers; thios is our range.

In India, the demolition segment is still in a nascent stage. Has it restricted your growth prospects in the rig-mounted hydraulic attachments sector?
The demolition segment, apart from hydraulic breakers, includes combicutters, demolition pulverisers, bulk pulverizers, and, for light demolition, multigrapples also. It is true that the growth prospect in India is less compared to the developed world but we have to be practical. India is yet to be developed as a demolition market. The main reason for the very slow pace is abundance of manpower and less construction.

How do you look at the competition, especially in the rock breaker segment and what makes Atlas Copco different?
What gives us an edge is the KRUPP percussion technology with which our breakers are incorporated, and thus, gives highest power-to-weight ratio, maximum power, maximum productivity and minimum cost per tonne. The technical features are coupled with our all-India reach directly, through our regional offices and our dealers.

Are there any plans for a new range, or new products other than breakers?
We have already launched our rig- mounted hydraulic bucket crushers recently and expect good results in the quarry and road construction segment.

Which are the major segments Atlas Copco is focused on, for its attachment business?
The quarry segment, hirer segment, road construction and underground tunnel construction.

Has the slowdown in the market also impacted the attachment segment?
Unfortunately, yes. We had achieved 35 per cent growth over 2011 in the first quarter of the calendar year, and we have seen the growth curve more or less flattening out.
