DMG conducts 2nd survey on mining leases

The directorate of mines and geology (DMG), Goa found 12 non-working mining leases within Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary (NWLS).

The directorate found this through the second survey of 37 mining leases that was completed recently. In order to determine the distance from the periphery of the mining leases boundaries to WLS and NP, the survey was conducted jointly by DMG and forest department.

The survey also shows that there are five working mining leases adjacent to the sanctury and four partly in the sanctuary.

The survey also found that three mining leases are within 1 km of NWLS, 12 within 10 km of NWLS and one beyond 10 km of NWLS.

The directorate submitted the report of the survey to the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF).

Including this, the DMG completed survey of 91 mining leases of a total of 336 valid leases. The first survey report of 54 mining leases was submitted to the MoEF recently.

In the first survey, one mining lease was found to be within the confines of a wildlife sanctuary (WLS), 49 within 10 km of WLS and national parks (NP) and four mining leases beyond 10 km of WLS and NP.
