Evacution of coal to be the focus of CIL

Expressing concern over poor evacuation infrastructure, S Narsing Rao, Chairman of Coal India (CIL) said the firm would focus more on increasing offtake of coal during 2013-14.

He said owing to hurdles in evacuation, the company aims to produce only 482 million tonne (mn t) coal in 2013-14 despite having potential to produce 525 mn t.

Output at CIL would be affected by the lack of new railway tracks for new mines despite the higher availability of railway rakes.

Further, Rao assured that his firm would supply coal to any generating power plant with a firm PPA with a power distribution company.

CIL has 58 mn t of pithead stock currently and the aggregate stock in power plants is close to 20 mn t (16 days' supply).

In 2012-13, CIL had supplied 132.84 mn t coal to NTPC - a growth of 14.7 per cent over 2011-12. The supply to NTPC was 105 per cent of the contracted coal quantity for the year, he said adding out of 492 million tonne of coal offtake target, supply to the power major will be 377 mn t.
