There has been substantial growth in the overall construction equipment (CE) market in the last one year due to huge investments being made by the government for infrastructure development in the country. Certain segments like excavators, wheel loaders, soil and asphalt compactors and motor grader have seen sizeable growth to the tune of 40-100 per cent. Today there is potential for every manufacturer in the market.

Market challenges
The market has seen a substantial growth in demand in a very short time due to a large investment by the government in multiple segments within the overall infrastructure sector. Adding to that, every region of the world has their economy looking up resulting in an unprecedented demand on the Tier 2 and 3 suppliers at the moment. The real challenge lies in quick ramp up and capacity creation for supply of raw material, components and machines. Besides, it is a big challenge to get good quality and skilled manpower. Upgrading the skills of workforce in the fast changing technology scenario is also a challenge.

A platform of opportunity
Excon is the largest platform for showcasing technology and market opportunities in the field of construction technology in India. When the business is doing very well, it provides financial strength to organisations to invest their resources to participate and showcase their capabilities in terms of products and technology. It is also the largest platform for the entire industry (OEMs, component and raw material suppliers as well as customers) paving the way for B2B and B2C engagement.

Large participation from OEMs, component suppliers, foreign manufacturers, customers and regulators is a key indicator of the optimism of CE market.

Key focus
We should be seeing a host of new machines, new technology introduction in terms of equipment with BS IV engines, lower emission systems, more ergonomically designed controls and cabins, advanced and smart control systems with electronics inbuilt, use and introduction of GPS in the construction equipment, high reliability equipment with advanced safety features and a host of work attachments. We should also be witnessing use of lightweight technology, application of additive manufacturing, use of electrical technology in construction equipment drivetrains. Higher level of participation from overseas manufacturers and suppliers during Excon 2017 showcasing the latest technology available in Europe and other advanced regions would also be a key development in this year's Excon.

Expectations galore
Excon will further boost the mood of the construction industry. Besides, it will be visited by a lot of customers who in turn will buy many of these equipment and parts, thus generating more business opportunities for manufacturers. This gives an opportunity for Indian OEMs, specialty component suppliers and global technology providers to showcase new technologies. This also gives an opportunity for Indian suppliers and customers to get a view of the global technology scenario and the direction.
