From Manufacturing Scale to Global Innovation

India is entering an important phase in its construction equipment journey. There is a growing focus on investments in infrastructure, urban development, mining, logistics and industrial capacity are creating sustained demand for construction and earthmoving equipment, while encouraging greater innovation across the supporting ecosystem.

This momentum presents India with an opportunity to build on its established industrial strengths and emerge as a globally competitive hub for construction equipment manufacturing, engineering and innovation. By 2030, the country can further strengthen its position across global value chains by combining manufacturing scale with deeper capabilities in product development, sustainability, R&D and exports.

Turning Market Momentum into Global Opportunity

India's expanding infrastructure programme is creating a strong foundation for the next phase of construction equipment growth. There is increasing equipment deployment and utilisation, which is encouraging manufacturers and component suppliers to develop solutions that deliver higher productivity, reliability and efficiency.

The opportunity extends beyond the domestic market. India's growing industrial capabilities, skilled workforce and expanding technology ecosystem create favourable conditions for companies to develop products in India for customers around the world. BKT’s experience demonstrates the potential of this ecosystem, with more than 3,600 specialised products reaching customers across more than 160 countries, supported by its manufacturing and R&D capabilities in India. The market scale in India provides an environment for gaining real-world insights and accelerating innovation, while global markets offer opportunities to extend these capabilities across geographies.

Building Manufacturing Excellence

India has developed a strong manufacturing base across automotive, engineering and industrial sectors. The next opportunity is to build greater depth in specialised manufacturing and create integrated ecosystems. For construction equipment and its supporting industries, manufacturing excellence is increasingly connected with the ability to control critical inputs, maintain consistent quality and respond efficiently to evolving product requirements.

BKT's manufacturing ecosystem provides an example of this integrated approach. The company operates facilities in Bhuj, Waluj, Bhiwadi and Chopanki, with its flagship Bhuj facility bringing together tyre manufacturing, carbon black, power, R&D and testing capabilities. The in-house carbon black production is particularly significant, as carbon black accounts for nearly 30% of a tyre's composition. This level of integration enables BKT to maintain consistency in quality and supply.

Integrated capabilities can strengthen India's position as a dependable global manufacturing base while creating opportunities for continued product and process innovation.

Sustainability as a Manufacturing Advantage

Sustainability is increasingly becoming an integral part of manufacturing competitiveness, particularly as global customers place greater emphasis on resource efficiency, responsible production and product longevity.

In the tyre industry, this encompasses the use of renewable and recycled materials, energy efficiency, water management, waste recovery and improvements in product longevity. These considerations are becoming increasingly relevant to product development as well as manufacturing.

BKT has been steadily strengthening these capabilities. In FY2024-25, 32% of its raw materials were renewable, while more than 98% of process waste was recycled. At its Bhuj facility, the integrated carbon black plant operates as a zero-liquid-discharge facility with complete water recycling. Initiatives involving reclaimed rubber, recycled steel and reused feedstock further support circularity across the manufacturing ecosystem.

The broader opportunity lies in integrating sustainability considerations into manufacturing and engineering decisions at every stage of development. For Indian manufacturers seeking to compete globally, resource-efficient processes and responsible material practices can increasingly complement quality, productivity and operational performance.

R&D and Engineering for the Next Generation

R&D capabilities will be central to India's ability to move further up the global construction equipment value chain. As equipment becomes increasingly specialised, product development requires a deeper understanding of machinery, applications and operating environments.

For tyre manufacturers, this means engineering products around the specific requirements of the equipment. The principle of offering the right tyre for the right application is therefore particularly relevant. Construction, mining and earthmoving applications can involve significant differences in machinery, terrain, load and operating cycles, requiring solutions developed around these variables.

At BKT, continued investment in R&D, material science, simulation, testing and validation supports this approach. Collaboration with OEM partners also provides valuable insight into equipment requirements and enables product development to be closely aligned with evolving machinery technologies. The industry partnerships help connect customer requirements with engineering capabilities and create solutions that are relevant to both Indian and international markets.

This capability becomes particularly important as the industry moves towards advanced radial construction and newer equipment technologies. BKT has introduced e-ready tyre solutions and is developing additional sizes with reduced rolling resistance to support modern electric machinery.

For India, strengthening such R&D capabilities can create a significant competitive advantage.

Strengthening India's Global Footprint

India’s opportunity to become a construction equipment powerhouse is closely linked to its ability to serve global markets. The growing domestic market provides a strong platform to build these capabilities at scale, while global markets offer opportunities to extend Indian engineering and manufacturing strengths. BKT’s presence across geographies demonstrates the potential of this approach, with a portfolio spanning agriculture, construction, mining, earthmoving, industrial and material-handling applications.

The opportunity for India is therefore to build increasingly strong connections between domestic manufacturing and global demand. ‘Make in India, For India, For the World’ can increasingly serve as the foundation for products that are engineered in India and built for the world.

The 2030 Opportunity

India's construction equipment opportunity is ultimately about building on the capabilities already taking shape across the country.

BKT's Vision 2030 roadmap focuses on targeting approximately INR 23,000 crore in revenue by FY2030, with growth anchored around three areas: strengthening the Off-Highway Tyre business, expanding the Carbon Black business and entering new tyre categories in India.

For India, the opportunity is equally compelling. The country can build on its manufacturing strengths and develop an ecosystem capable of meeting India's infrastructure ambitions and can contribute to global construction equipment value chains.

By 2030, India has the opportunity to be recognised as one of the world's leading construction equipment markets, and a globally relevant centre for the engineering, manufacturing and innovation that will shape the industry's next generation.
