Goa govt sets up panel to monitor mining project

Goa government set up a steering committee to monitor the progress in the development of the Raigarh coal block allocated to the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

The committee would try to solve the difficulties in developing the block, which is located in the Raigarh district of Chattishgarh.

In 2009, the Goa government was allocated the block, But so far, coal extraction from the block has not commenced.

Following this, Goa government set up the steering committee consisting of principal secretary (industries), principal secretary (mines), principal secretary (power), chief electrical engineer and managing director of GIDC.

The panel is directed to monitor regularly the progress in the mining project and iron out any issues viz-a-viz the central government, state government of Chhattisgarh, the power developers and the mine development operator.

Further, the steering committee has been directed to submit a status report about the coal block to Mahadev Naik, minister for industries.

The ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) is learnt to have given the environmental clearance for the project and the GIDC has reportedly completed most of the processes for extraction of coal from the block.
