IBM develops solution for mining firms

The US-based technology firm IBM developed an optimisation solution which allows integrated mining companies to enhance their supply chain operations by optimising each supply chain component in a fully integrated schedule.

IBM realised that the mining sector faces limited supply of output and ever rising demand. This underlines the need for new technologies in this industry, and the scale of this industry is so vast that a fraction of a percentage improvement in any single area can yield benefit in billions of dollars, an official of IBM said.

The 'Mine-to-Ship' solution developed by IBM helps mining firms increase resource usage and output and reduce cost of operations.

IBM feels that the solution would benefit firms in mining sector, which is witnessing an increase in exploration activities in metals and oil and gas sectors.

The scope of the Mine-to-Ship solution spans from the loading of materials into the trains at the mine hub to the berthing of the ships, loading and departure, IBM said.

The solution can take into account real-time operational information regarding equipment status, rolling stock status and location, equipment efficiency and planned maintenance, IBM said.
