ITS expected to make Noida-Greater Noida E'way safer

To monitor and manage traffic flow on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the Noida Authority is stepping up efforts to set up the Rs 15 crore Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Even as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has been prepared by the consultants, tenders are expected to be floated and finalised in this May.

The move is aimed at minimising accidents and make the expressway safer for motorists. Completion is projected within six months of the tenders being finalised and the project launched. Once in place, the system will reduce travel time, improve traffic regulation and surveillance besides reducing operational costs and incident reaction time.

It will also help measure traffic data in real-time, detect incidents and congestion automatically and inform road users about travel time, congestion, road closures, diversions, rerouting and all major events.

Key features of the ITS would be a control room, emergency call box, message signboards, CCTV, speed cameras, VIDS camera and meteorological data system.Since its inception in 2002, the expressway has been the site of hundreds of deaths. In the past six months, around 25 people have lost their lives, while hundreds have been injured. Officials said that the system will be equipped with cameras to detect movement to a distance of 280 metres.
