NTPC welcomes CIL's plan on coal supply

Power generation major NTPC welcomed the plan of Coal India (CIL) to divert its entire annual incremental production to the power sector.

Arup Roy Choudhury, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC said the company's 10 stations gets coal supply from CIL through a dedicated merry-go-round network and any increase in production would come to benefit the firm.

A merry-go-round train is a train of hopper cars used for loading and unloading coal, and running from the mine to the plant site and back.

It may be recalled that recently, the state-owned coal miner has reportedly said it was considering to deliver all the extra coal it will produce this year, and for the coming few years, to power companies. The mining firm also supplies the fuel to other crucial sectors, including cement, and iron and steel industries.

CIL supplied 315 million tonne (mn t) to the power sector in 2012-13. This year the firm is expected to produce an additional 32.5 mn t, all of which would go to power plants, reports suggest.
