Tapping into the potential of IIoT
As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to evolve and new innovations are born every day, almost all OEMs nowadays are working towards implementing Industry 4.0 solutions to be ahead of their game. It's the need of the hour! Today, every IoT solution is designed to provide a differentiated experience to the customer. IoT solutions also provide a means of diligently keeping track of the products sold to help increase the after sales spares revenue, improve product diagnostics capabilities, and enhance existing service levels.

Large scale deployments of telematics solutions still remains limited in India - with the exception of certain equipment such as backhoe loaders, excavators, gen sets, compressors where we can clearly see that the trend has caught on. While for other equipment such as transit mixers, concrete pumps, cranes and so on, it is still a work in progress.

Key challenges
In our experience, some of the key challenges that are preventing the widespread adoption of IoT solutions are:
Reliability issues: Device reliability is of utmost importance in harsh operating environments typical of industrial or construction sites. Even the most well-designed and user-friendly front-end will be useless if the back-end of the system is not reliable. Devices that are defective, or break down due to extreme temperatures and other harsh environmental factors have a negative effect on the IoT adoption.
Flexibility issues: In any interconnected system, all of its component devices must be able to easily communicate with each other-to speak in the same language, even if these devices work in very different fields. Lack of common software interfaces, standard data formats, and common connectivity protocols end up complicating things in IoT world.
Scalability issues: More often than not, IoT pilot projects are successful but large scale IoT deployments fail miserably. Teething challenges take way too much time and are very difficult to overcome.
Hardware, system and implementation costs: Basic hardware, system and cost of implementing the IoT infrastructure is often perceived as overwhelming. One of the main causes of worry for any organisation is the RoI on IoT initiatives. This is where the importance of choosing the right IoT solution provider comes to the centre stage.
Security issues: As billions of assets get smarter and are networked to store information on the cloud, they become exposed to digital privacy risks. Cyber attacks pose a range of threats - from personal devices to corporate IT systems - making both individuals and institutions vulnerable to financial and operational damage. IoT devices communicate automatically with each other. In the absence of a secure and properly encrypted network, the adoption of IoT could lead to brand new vulnerabilities. Unavailability of the right ecosystem - OEMs often need to work with multiple partners for the required hardware, embedded, software or the platform part of the solution. It's very rare to find all those capabilities under the same roof.

Industrial IoT - Need of the hour
As the IoT adoption picks up in India, sectors like industrial manufacturing, energy and utilities, transport, logistics and agriculture will lead the market and it is predicted that industrial IoT will surpass the consumer IoT space in the country by 2020. So no matter the challenges, it has become imperative for any business to adopt IoT to survive in the long run.

There is an innate need for a flexible, reliable and a scalable solution that can work across multiple devices and is seamlessly compatible with existing deployed industry 4.0 solutions. OEMs need to have more control on the IoT solution so that they can tweak the product without incurring enormous change management costs. IoT platform evolution needs to happen at the same pace as product evolution which also takes into account the various changes with regards to emission norms, security requirements, evolving standards and so on. The success of the Industrial IoT depends heavily on a robust high-performing backend infrastructure.
