We have the capacity to produce over a thousand cranes per annum
At ElectroMech, we ensure that our products run safely and accident possibilities are minimised. Our cranes are designed and manufactured confirming to, and in many cases, exceeding the requirements of the design standards, says Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech. In a chat with Equipment India, Mehendale shares details about the industrial crane sector. Excerpts from the interview.

What is the overall demand-supply scenario for industrial cranes?
The need for industrial cranes will continue to grow in a variety of sectors. These include infrastructure construction, power, equipment manufacturing, logistics and transportation infrastructure, automobile, steel and general engineering. India?s industrial output and need for a better infrastructure will drive the demand for industrial cranes. There will be a growth in various sectors at different speed. Thus all the sectors, be it manufacturing, power, infrastructure or heavy engineering, will demand cranes over a span of five to seven years.

What is the range offered by ElectroMech in industrial cranes?
We offer an entire range of products ranging from electric wire rope hoists, single girder and double girder EOT cranes, jib cranes, wall travelling cranes, goliath cranes, under-slung cranes, as well as special purpose cranes such as stacker cranes and tunnel mucking systems. In addition, we are exclusive India partners for ABUS crane systems, Germany, for their entire range of standardised hoists and cranes. We also solely represent Stahl?s range of explosion protected hoists and cranes in India. We have been constantly developing and implementing new methods to improve all our work systems from sales to dispatching of cranes. This is easily visible in our product range be it the constant evolution of products as well as new ones from international leaders.

Tell us about the HB system, its features and advantages, application areas and growth potential.
The HB system is one of the most successful developments in lifting and material handling technology, combining the effectiveness of a stationary hoist with the mobility of an overhead crane, efficiently and cost-effectively. ElectroMech delivers the lightweight cranes to their Indian customers, in collaboration with ABUS KraneSystems, the leading European crane manufacturer. The profiles of the HB system are designed by using advanced computer-aided design and finite element analysis enabling to cater to a wide range of load handling applications from 80 kg to 2,000 kg.

These systems are used extensively in automobile assembly lines. Other areas where this product is used include tool rooms, work stations, machine shops, and light fabrication shops, for handling smaller components in a store and multiple access areas through point to point coverage by curved tracks. The main advantage of an ABUS HB system is that it can easily be extended and adapted at any time, allowing it to grow with ones? business.

What is the range offered by ElectroMech for the heavy lifting requirements?
One of the products offered by ElectroMech in heavy lifting equipment is the Goliath/Gantry cranes. The capacity for these cranes could vary from 5 T to 300 T as per the customer?s requirement. These cranes can be supplied in the single girder or double girder options depending on requirements of SWL, speeds, heights of lift and other characteristics. Hoisting for these cranes can be through a standard electric wire rope hoist (EL Series or ABUS) for a single girder configuration. For double girder gantry cranes, the hoisting can either incorporate standard ABUS crabs (up to a SWL of 100 MT) or fully customised open winch type crabs. ElectroMech can also provide different versions of these cranes so as to suit the requirement. For example, in workshops where part utilisation of the shop bay is required, a semi-gantry crane can be provided, as can cranes with overhangs on one/both sides; an auxiliary hoisting mechanism can also be fitted on the main hoisting trolley and multiple hoisting trolleys running on the same bridge.

Brief us about the current safety norms and regulations.
At ElectroMech, we ensure that our products run safely and accident possibilities are minimised. Our cranes are designed and manufactured, confirming to, and in many cases exceeding, the requirements of the design standards. But design factors of safety are not enough. We also provide a lot of extra safety features which can enhance safe operations on the shop floor. Some examples include load limiters to prevent over-loading of the crane, mechanical and electrical interlocks for motion control, smooth start-smooth stop systems, anti-sway systems to prevent load swinging, auto-shut down of the crane in case of unacceptable supply conditions, safe working platforms to facilitate maintenance.

Our factory and welding process have received the Approval of Welding certificate from leading classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Hamburg, Germany. This was instrumental for our contract with Cargotec, our client in the shipping industry. The company is also ISO 9001:2008 certified, with UKAS accreditation. We are now in the process of putting our systems in place for the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) certificates.

Apart from this, through our services subsidiary Cranedge, we also ensure proper preventive maintenance and take care of the crane during its service life. Through Cranedge, we ensure that all the safety systems are maintained and working properly. Brake settings are checked, proper lubrication is ensured, loose connections and fastenings are rectified, hooks are checked, wire rope condition is monitored, etc. These activities help ensure that the crane is running safely and performing the required duties. In addition to providing crane servicing characteristics such as spares support, repairs, services and overhauling, crane health checks, it also provides various other aspects such as modifications and retrofits, relocation of cranes, annual maintenance contracts, crane safety certification, etc. A dedicated team of well-trained and skilled engineers and technicians are available to take care of the same.

To what extent are the hoisting solutions offered holistic in nature?
ElectroMech is not simply a manufacturer or seller of cranes, but looks at client needs holistically and focuses on providing a well-engineered turnkey hoisting solution. ElectroMech?s partnership with their clients does not end with the commissioning and installation of hoisting solutions, but they also help clients with the on-going care, repairs, and modernisation of their hoisting solutions (whether manufactured by ElectroMech or not) in a cost-effective manner.

ElectroMech differentiates between technology and solution. While technology is used to find a unique and reliable solution to the clients? hoisting needs, solution consists of meeting clients? business needs around project costs, top-line impact, bottom-line impact, and overall ?total cost of solution ownership?. ElectroMech?s service is geared to ensure that client investments in hoisting solutions continue to deliver business value over extended periods of time. ElectroMech emphasises continued training of its engineers to equip them with the latest knowledge backed with a wide network and extensive inventory of spare parts.

Brief us on the manufacturing facility.
ElectroMech?s manufacturing facility in Pirangut, Pune, is the largest single location dedicated crane manufacturing plant in India. We have a capacity to produce over a thousand cranes per annum, which is sufficient to meet current demands of the industry. Our range of products has precise operational efficiency along with state-of-the-art handling technology. Our manufacturing techniques are on par with international standards, from CNC plasma cutting machines for crane girders, shot blasting and a dedicated paint booth for finished crane components, etc.

Why should a customer buy from ElectroMech?
We consider ElectroMech to be a solution provider and not just a supplier of cranes. It is one thing pulling out a catalogue and selling cranes but it is a totally different ball game when one has to sit with the customer, understand their handling requirements, appreciate their plant layouts, understand the constraints, provide information on wheel loads and crane geometry, suggest alternatives to their architects and structural consultant, in short, handhold the customer and guide him towards selection of the most optimum equipment that will satisfy his need. We believe that a service approach to selling is more important. Customers appreciate this approach and are happy to involve us right from the project conceptualisation stage.

CRANEDGE

The industrial cranes sector in India lacks an organised after sales service offerings. Mostly the manufacturers? involvement ends with the commissioning of the equipment. In the end, it is left to the end user to service and maintain the crane.

ElectroMech realised this problem and the urgent situation to address the customer?s needs. We believe in a solutions approach while selling. In addition to selling cranes, we provide well-engineered hoisting solutions.

This gave rise to the beginning of Cranedge, a separate business unit to exclusively cater to the after sales service requirements of our clients. Through this unique body, we offer dedicated services for all industrial cranes irrelevant of the makes or the parent company. A team of well-trained and skilled team of engineers and technicians make this service available and help us to ensure maximum return on their investments to all our clients.

The service provides spares support, repairs, services and overhauling, annual maintenance contracts, crane health checks, modifications and retrofits, relocation of cranes and crane safety certification. Cranedge services follow the concept of offering service at your doorstep, to reach zero downtime and building lifetime relationships.
