We’re pursuing indigenisation efforts across our product lines
Alok Tripathi, President, TIL Limited
What are the new products you are showcasing at Excon 2025?
This Excon 2025 marks a pivotal moment for TIL as we unveil three new material handling products that represent significant breakthroughs in their respective categories. The headline product is our revolutionary, all-new, fully patented, pick-and-carry-on-deck crane, which we believe will redefine this segment in India. This machine has been engineered with a holistic understanding of modern job-site challenges and offers a powerful 15-tonne pick-and-carry capacity at a 2.5-metre radius. Higher capacity variants are also in the pipeline, along with other feature changes. We're also relaunching one of our popular models in an 85-tonne truck crane capacity with additional features and competitive pricing, aimed at reclaiming market share in a segment where we once held 70 to 80 per cent leadership.
The third new product is a rough terrain empty container handler designed specifically for Indian conditions, capable of operating on unpaved ground — this product addresses a critical gap in the market in terms of safety, efficiency, and capability. These launches represent the beginning of a comprehensive product expansion strategy that will see TIL moving beyond its existing product portfolio and being recognised as an engineering solutions provider that customises equipment to meet the customer’s needs. The investments we've been making over the past year are now translating into tangible innovations that will unlock new market categories for us. This pace of new product development also showcases the ability of our teams to turn ideas into reality at pace and at scale.
How are your machines addressing the demand for efficiency, safety, and sustainability in India's infrastructure growth?
Safety is non-negotiable for TIL 2.0, and it’s precisely this philosophy that distinguishes our new products, especially our pick-and-carry-on-deck crane, which is aimed at a market segment that has unfortunately witnessed numerous accidents and fatalities due to machines that compromise on safety. We believe roughly one-third of the pick-and-carry crane market—particularly large companies and contractors working on major infrastructure projects—will gravitate toward our product because safety is a major concern for them.
From an efficiency standpoint, our machines are designed to reduce operational complexity and costs. Sustainability is embedded in our design choices. Our new crane runs on a BS-V (CEV) compliant engine, supporting India's environmental goals while ensuring reliability and performance. Beyond individual machines, we're investing heavily in aftermarket services with a focus on predictive maintenance and uptime optimisation. By monitoring machines remotely and anticipating service needs proactively, we help customers maximise equipment availability and lifecycle value, which ultimately reduces resource consumption and improves overall project efficiency. As India builds future-ready cities and advanced infrastructure, TIL remains committed to driving progress with machinery that's smarter, safer, and more environmentally responsible.
With India focusing on mega infrastructure projects, how do you see the demand evolving for large vs. mid-sized/small equipment?
India’s infrastructure story is unfolding across multiple dimensions simultaneously, and that creates demand across the entire equipment spectrum. The mega projects—whether ports, highways, defence infrastructure, or large-scale construction—certainly drive demand for heavy-duty equipment. However, what's equally compelling is the demand for mid-sized and versatile equipment that can serve India's diverse project landscape. The pick-and-carry crane segment, with an annual market size of 14,000 to 15,000 units, is substantially larger than the truck crane market precisely because these machines serve a wider range of applications—from industrial projects and logistics yards to mining operations and smaller construction sites.
The beauty of equipment like our new pick-and-carry-on-deck crane is its versatility; it addresses the needs of contractors who require mobility, efficiency, and capability without the scale or cost of larger cranes. Similarly, our rough-terrain cranes in the 20 to 80 tonne range serve a market of approximately 150 units annually, addressing projects in challenging terrains where all-terrain cranes may be excessive, but capability is still essential. The container handling segment—roughly 75 to 100 units per year—serves the growing logistics and port infrastructure ecosystem.
What role does localisation play in your product strategy for India?
First, our manufacturing footprint itself—with facilities in Kamarhati and Kharagpur in Eastern India—represents a commitment to indigenous production. Our Kharagpur facility, built on demand flow and lean principles and equipped with advanced fabrication shops and semi-automatic welding machines conforming to international standards, produces equipment that meets global quality benchmarks. We hold ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 3834 certifications, and our facility houses India’s only ReachStacker testing track.
Second, we’re pursuing wide-ranging indigenisation efforts across our product lines. While we maintain strategic partnerships with global leaders like Hyster-Yale and Manitowoc for technology collaboration and certain critical components, we’re systematically increasing local content in our machines. This effort extends to developing vendor ecosystems around our facilities—as we've scaled ReachStacker production from just three units in 2010 to over 50 units annually, supplier networks have developed organically. We've cultivated vendor relationships across Eastern India that support both our facilities, and we're working closely with them to enhance quality and capability.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, localisation means designing for Indian conditions. Our empty container handler, for instance, is specifically engineered to operate on unpaved ground—a common reality in India that most imported equipment doesn't adequately address. Beyond products, our pan-India service network spanning Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi represents localisation of aftermarket support. We’re investing heavily in strengthening our field force, training technicians, and building inventory closer to where customers operate. With initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' creating genuine momentum, TIL is positioned as a contributor to India's self-reliance in critical equipment categories. Our projected domestic defence order pipeline of Rs 2,000 crore over five years directly reflects this indigenous manufacturing capability.
How is your company addressing after-sales service and spare parts availability in remote project sites?
TIL’s approach to after-sales service is built on one idea: the best equipment must be backed by the best support. Our products are engineered for quality and reliability, but we know that true value is delivered only when customers experience consistent uptime, even at the most remote project sites. As the aftermarket business expands across India, it has become a key driver of TIL’s overall growth. We have invested heavily in building one of the most preferred service networks in the sector, supported by trained, skilled and highly competitive technicians who can diagnose and fix issues quickly. This ensures that customers get expert support wherever their equipment is deployed.
To strengthen parts availability, we are expanding our parts depots and upgrading digital systems for faster order processing and inventory visibility. Our rebuild centre adds another layer of support, allowing customers to extend equipment life through structured overhauls and certified refurbishments.
Technology plays a central role in how we deliver service today. Telematics and remote monitoring allow us to track machine health, predict failures and schedule maintenance before downtime occurs. Our digital platforms will also enable live parts purchase, giving customers direct access to real-time stock and faster delivery.
The goal is simple. Reduce operating costs, eliminate unnecessary downtime and help customers maximise profitability. With stronger logistics, smarter tools and a service team that knows the machines inside out, TIL is committed to ensuring that every customer gets reliable support and uninterrupted performance, no matter how remote the project may be.
What are your growth priorities for the Indian market in the next three to five years?
Over the next three to five years, our growth priorities for the Indian market are built around diversification, technology and deeper customer engagement. We plan to launch new products continuously, aligned with market needs and customer feedback. This includes both brand-new platforms and upgraded versions of existing models. Our focus is to locally assemble and manufacture equipment that meets global quality standards while staying true to our core strengths in safe, reliable material handling and lifting solutions.
We are entering new market segments and re-entering high-potential ones, including truck cranes, pick-and-carry models and container-handling equipment across capacities from 15 tonne to more than 300 tonne. Alongside this, we are expanding into export markets where Indian engineering can compete strongly on performance and value.
The aftermarket business will be a major pillar of growth. We are strengthening our rebuild programs, trade-in offerings, and certified refurbished equipment line to give customers more cost-efficient ownership options. Rental and used equipment will also be important enablers for project contractors looking for flexible, asset-light solutions. Service contracts and long-term maintenance agreements will help us deepen our engagement with customers and deliver predictable uptime.
Refurbished and rebuilt equipment will allow us to capture value from older fleets while delivering a product that performs like new. Our rebuild centres will support this transition with structured overhauls and certified component restoration. We will continue to design and build specialised products for defence where reliability and safety cannot be compromised. Overall, our goal is to profitably regain share in legacy categories, establish a strong presence in new segments and build a full-cycle business. This balanced strategy will define TIL’s growth roadmap for the next phase.
