Bridgestone India to Restore Water Bodies in Madhya Pradesh
Bridgestone India has launched Project PRAVAAH to restore traditional water bodies and improve groundwater recharge in water-stressed areas of Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. Implemented by the Society for Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability, the initiative will cover three water bodies across around 140 acres of catchment area.
Dhar district has faced groundwater depletion and water shortages over the years, with groundwater extraction levels approaching or exceeding annual recharge in some areas. Groundwater levels have also declined to around 10–20 metres below ground level, particularly during pre-monsoon periods, affecting drinking water availability and irrigation.
Project PRAVAAH aims to recharge up to 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of groundwater while restoring local ecosystems and strengthening community resilience. The initiative combines nature-based restoration with community participation and livelihood opportunities for marginalised women. It is expected to improve water availability for households, livestock and agriculture while supporting biodiversity.
The project complements Bridgestone India’s existing environmental initiatives, which include 9.5 acres of biodiversity parks and community gardens focused on environmental education, biodiversity awareness and nature conservation.
Sudhir Kulkarni, Executive Director – HR, Admin & CSR, Bridgestone India, said the initiative is aimed at addressing acute water shortages faced by communities in Dhar by restoring ponds as living ecosystems.
Through Project PRAVAAH, Bridgestone India seeks to strengthen water security, revive biodiversity and improve the ability of rural communities to respond to climate-related challenges.
