Construction sector: A huge contributor to country's fast-paced development initiatives
The construction industry plays an instrumental role in the overall infrastructure development of a country. India’s construction industry is forecast to record growth of 11.8% in 2021 and expected to become the world’s third-largest construction market by 2022. The infrastructure sector is a crucial driver for the Indian economy. The industry is essentially responsible for propelling India’s overall development. This is the reason it enjoys special attention from the Government for initiating policies that would ensure the country’s time-bound creation of world-class infrastructure.

Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent lockdown restrictions weighed on the industry’s output last year, it experienced a contraction of 12.4% in 2020. Construction was among the significantly impacted industries due to it and sales of construction equipment also fell globally. But since June 2021, the employment-intensive construction industry has witnessed resumption in operations, albeit at a curtailed level.

Private sector is emerging as a key player across various infrastructure segments, ranging from roads and communications to power and airports.

In the Union Budget 2021, the government allocated Rs. 60,241 crore ($8.28 billion) for road works and Rs 57,350 crore ($7.88 billion) for the National Highways. It plans to construct 8,500-km road by March 2022. Add to this, rapid urbanisation leading to increased demand for housing projects. The increasing number of infrastructure projects and mega construction projects are anticipated to further fuel the demand for construction equipment, which is touted to be the backbone of this industry. In keeping with this projected demand, the global construction equipment market size is projected to reach $205.0 billion by 2025, from an estimated value of $169.3 billion in 2020, at a 3.9% CAGR.
