Doppstadt deploys Cat electric power unit
Doppstadt has selected Caterpillar’s Cat Battery Electric Power Unit (BEPU) to power its SWS 6 Spiral Shaft Separator, with the prototype scheduled to be showcased for the first time at IFAT 2026 in Munich, Germany, recently. The Cat BEPU is designed as a compact plug-and-play electrification solution that enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to replace diesel engines without redesigning their existing machine platforms.

The integrated system combines the battery, motor, inverter, onboard charging, cooling and controls into a single package, allowing OEMs to maintain the same mounting locations and machine architecture while offering both diesel and electric variants. Caterpillar stated that this approach simplifies engineering, procurement, servicing and support, while helping manufacturers reduce development time and accelerate the introduction of electric machines to market.

The BEPU is also intended to lower the complexity associated with electrification projects by reducing engineering and sourcing requirements. Caterpillar noted that the solution offers OEMs greater flexibility to meet customer demands for zero-exhaust emissions, lower noise levels and reduced maintenance requirements, while potentially lowering total cost of ownership through the elimination of fuel consumption.

Over the past year, Caterpillar and Cat dealer Zeppelin Power Systems have worked with Doppstadt to integrate the BEPU into the SWS 6 Spiral Shaft Separator. Doppstadt, known for its recycling solutions, selected the Cat system citing product reliability and dealer support. The resulting electric separator has been designed specifically for indoor, urban and highly regulated operating environments.

Andy Curtis, Customer Solutions Director at Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems Division, said the collaboration demonstrates how the BEPU enables rapid development of electric variants alongside diesel-powered machines with minimal engineering effort. He added that the machine’s intermittent duty cycle and suitability for indoor applications make it well suited for battery-electric operation.

The prototype will be displayed at Doppstadt’s booth FM.709/1 in the outdoor area at IFAT Munich from May 4–7, 2026, with Caterpillar representatives available to discuss the BEPU technology. Zeppelin Power Systems will also organise a technical deep-dive session on May 5. Following the exhibition, Doppstadt plans to commence field trials of the BEPU-powered separator to evaluate performance in real-world conditions and support future development of the solution.
