Atlas Copco will be entering the on-site portable generator market in India for the first time, in line with our global range, with the unique selling proposition of ?Predictable Power.? Better still, it is to be manufactured in India, says Vinay Jain, Business Line Manager APE, Atlas Copco Construction Technique. Excerpts from the interview.

Could you brief us on the new QAX range of generators and its unique selling points?
With strong global references and global presence, Predictable Power enables our customers to predict the quantum on different parameters such as fuel efficiency, operational maintenance cost, resale value and ultimately, the lifecycle cost of the generator.

In terms of breakthrough technology, Atlas Copco brings a unique generator concept. As a pure synergy product with the Atlas Copco portable compressor, the new QAX range uses the same XAHS186 box and hence it possesses all the design strengths required for all heavy-duty mobile applications. A proven concept and long-term experience in the Indian market will be easily recognised by the end user.

What makes it different from the existing models in the same class/type?
The QAX range design is dedicated to mobile prime power applications, where performance, serviceability, transportability, silencing and safe operations are the key factors. The Predictable Power, as the Atlas Copco on-site generators? core value, is what makes our offering unique. QAX is more than an engine and alternator, it is an all-rounder which gives complete value to the customer with a focus on the lifecycle cost of the equipment.

Which are the major areas of design changes or other sub systems that are used to enhance its prowess?
Since we are coming out with generators in India for the first time, we are using the most efficient engine, alternator, cooling system, control system, base frame, and suchlike. Also, compliance with CPCB norms is also on the cards. The advantage of Atlas Copco is that we are not bound by any OEM for engines/alternators, unlike others who have to use their own engines/alternators and thereby may compromise on the efficiency.

Is the machine developed for any specific, innovative application?
In order to achieve the optimal sizing, and fit a smaller model for the same application / load, the QAX range featured an optimal combination engine alternator that includes a digital type AVR able to control / limit starting currents. In keeping with our vision, to be and remain the first in mind first in choice? for our customers, we have always led the market with new products, with a strong focus on our customer?s needs.

Are there any new additions in the compressor range?
Atlas Copco is a global leader in portable air compressors, with more than 140 years of long and proven experience. Our compressors are rugged on wheels and we have the solid expertise in making the best portable options. In keeping with this leadership position, Atlas Copco has also launched the compressor range with the aim of reducing the total cost of ownership. Our new compressor range is named XA 127-187 and XA216-316 and has eight various models, depending on application/segment. It is the only one in the market which offers wide options for all segments.

Is this range on display at Excon 2013?
Yes, of course. One of the compressor models, XAH236, which is part of our Excon display, is a compressor which offers a capacity of 500 CFM and 175 PSI as against the 450 CFM and 150 PSI being offered by other competitors from so many years now. Being market leaders in compressors, Atlas Copco always believes in leading the game by focusing on innovation to increase productivity. With higher capacity, more efficient elements and more pressure, our compressors offer higher productivity to the customer, and a minimum productivity level that is at least 30 to 35 per cent higher than the traditional compressors.

Another addition to the compressor portfolio is the XA187, which also forms part of our Excon display, an upgraded version of the XA176. This is the best selling model in the Atlas Copco portable air compressor stable. In terms of value addition, the XA187 is capable of running four jack hammers at the best fuel efficiency, compared to a maximum of the three jack hammers currently being offered by the competition, which means an increase in capacity by 10 to 12 per cent. The number of jack hammers depends on the quality and the brand of jack hammers used.

What are the advantages of the new range of compressors? Atlas Copco offers the widest range of compressors in the market today, thereby empowering customers with a large portfolio to choose from. Further, our compressors are specifically tailor-made for Indian applications and conditions, enabling the specific application need to be suitably met. If we talk about the results of upgradation with reference to the existing products available in the market, this new compressor range has many advantages which includes optimum fuel consumption, 18 per cent lesser footprints, reduction in maintenance costs, improved reliability, hood design to give better serviceability and much more.

From the recognised compressor design, we also bring optimal sizing to the application with benefits on fuel consumption. Further, Atlas Copco with their strong service network will ensure the required uptime to the customers by providing prompt service and spares at all the locations.

Have any design changes been made to the earlier models?
In the case of XAH 236, we have used a different element with very high efficiency and precision, which ensures enhanced performance. This has been manufactured in a state- of-the- art facility from AirPower, Belgium. Hence the compressors are more efficient and have better productivity per hour. These machines are powered with one of the most widely accepted engines in India, Ashok Leyland?s 6Dti

The XA 176 has been upgraded by using the best efficient elements. The major changes include aluminium colling package, increased safety features, an optimised control panel, engine rating to match with element resulting in optimal performance. We are listening to the customer and are continuously innovating to match our compressor offerings to customer needs. Our offerings range from the 200 to 410 CFM range to the 450 CFM to 650 CFM range, thereby increasing the scope of applications that are covered.
