XCMG Sends Rescue Equipment to Nairobi Building Collapse
An 18-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood on the afternoon of 23 October, while ground-floor shops were open and construction workers were on site. The Kenya Defence Forces, Red Cross and police launched search and rescue operations amid extensive rubble and collapsed concrete.
XCMG’s Kenya office sent a team to coordinate with the National Disaster Operations Centre and police rescue personnel. Following a request for assistance, the company dispatched an excavator on 23 October and a 25-tonne crane on 24 October. The equipment and personnel worked under the direction of the on-site rescue team to help search for people trapped beneath the rubble and clear access routes.
William Sifuna Watitwa, a police personnel officer for the Nairobi North sub-region, told Xinhua the excavator was crucial in freeing two survivors. He said the crane helped lift heavy wreckage, reducing the weight of the debris and improving access to areas where survivors might be located.
Fredrick Nyasani, an administrator at XCMG’s Kenya office, said the company had a responsibility to support local rescue teams with its equipment and technical personnel.
As of 25 October, government officials said five people remained missing and four were receiving hospital treatment. XCMG said its rescue team would continue supporting operations until its work at the site was complete.
