Liebherr Electric Crawler Crane Supports Dutch Lock Upgrade
Liebherr's battery-powered LR 1130.1 unplugged crawler crane is being deployed by De Klerk Werkendam for the refurbishment of the Brouwer sluice lock complex on the Brouwersdam in the Netherlands. The project involves replacing 50-year-old sheet pile structures that regulate water flow between the North Sea and the Grevelingenmeer.
The company is installing 162 new sheet piles, each measuring 23 metres in length. The highly compacted sandy soil of the embankment requires a high-performance sheet pile vibrator and robust lifting equipment. The LR 1130.1 unplugged crane operates from a barge, positioning the sheet piles and transferring construction materials from the shore. The existing piles are removed following the installation of the new structures.
De Klerk Werkendam selected the battery-powered crane to meet growing requirements for low-emission construction sites. The electric machine offers reduced noise and eliminates local exhaust emissions during operation. According to Liebherr, the combined idling noise of three unplugged crawler cranes measured from 16 metres is comparable to a normal conversation heard from one metre.
The crane's battery can be charged using a conventional construction site electricity supply, allowing operations to continue during charging. It can also operate independently on battery power without compromising performance or application capabilities compared with its diesel-powered counterpart.
The work pontoon features an electric drive, electric spud piles and a hybrid system integrating battery storage and solar panels. When connected to shore power, the combined crane and pontoon arrangement operates almost entirely without local emissions, with only the hydraulic power unit of the sheet pile vibrator requiring diesel.
De Klerk Werkendam considers the electrically powered pontoon and crawler crane combination a distinctive solution in the Netherlands. Following positive experiences with equipment reliability, spare parts availability and technical support, the company plans to expand its fleet of electric cranes.
The deployment highlights the potential of battery-powered construction equipment to support complex hydraulic infrastructure projects while reducing noise and emissions at construction sites.
