Construction equipment sales to grow 10 per cent in 2017

The construction equipment sales in India is expected to grow 10 per cent this year, according to an Off-Highway Research report. Off-Highway Research expects sales to exceed 73,000 units this year, surpassing the previous record sales of 72,492 units seen in 2011. The market in the first half of the year was particularly strong ahead of the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1.

JCB to produce compaction units from Pune plant

The UK-based construction equipment maker JCB will relocate its compaction equipment production unit to India. The move is aimed at strengthening the company's foothold in emerging markets. According to the company, JCB has decided that, by the end of June 2014, production of all VM compactors and two larger VM tandem rollers will relocate to JCB?s factory in Pune.

JCB to close German factory

JCB plans to close its factory in Gatersleben, Germany, which was acquired in 2005 when it bought German compaction equipment manufacturer Vibromax in 2005. The decision has been taken to improve its competitiveness in the compaction sector following a strategic review of the business and changes in global market conditions. It will shift production of the products made in Gatersleben by the end of June this year.

Road 2 recovery

Despite the present day gloom in the market, the future for the construction equipment sector, especially for the road equipment segment in India, still holds much potential as this sector has a profound and immediate impact on the country?s economic growth. Off-Highway Research is optimistic about the growth in demand for road equipment and forecasts growth at a CAGR of 12.67 per cent over the next five years. Agith G Antony finds out more about the positive vibes in the industry.

Growth will pick up only if the government ensures a good mix of BOT and EPC projects

The government has to address issues like long-term funding for road projects, faster land clearances and introducing more stringent prequalification criteria for contractors who are bidding for road projects. The blocks have to be cleared to expedite a healthy growth in this sector and to attract the private sector for BOT projects, says Rohit Punjabi, Assistant Director (Strategy and Marketing), Liugong India. The government should award projects only after securing key sovereign clearances.

With the government planning for a major infrastructure boom in the North-Eastern states, we foresee a lot of potential for businesses to grow and flourish.
